Your base is one of the most important parts of your shot, it’s where all of our power comes from when we shoot the ball. So how should your shooting base be in order to have the smoothest shot? The ideal space for your feet to be is about shoulder width apart, however if you’re more comfortable with a bit wider or thinner base than that, that’s totally acceptable as well. As long as your feet aren’t too close together or too far apart, try to find your sweet spot. Next thing about your base, I want to stop worrying about pointing your feet directly at the basket, this was taught for years but has been disproven through shooters like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and many others. Your feet should be tilted a little bit where one foot is a bit ahead of the other. This works because our bodies naturally want to turn in air when we shoot the ball, so what we’ve done is take away that turn in mid air and changed it to before we even jump, this way there is one less factor that could screw up our shot. The final thing about a proper base is the bend of the knees, it’s called a jump shot for a reason, you’re supposed to jump, however you shouldn’t be max vert testing on a jumpshot. This jump is usually very slight and varies between different players. Find the sweet spot again where you need to bend your knees because again it’s different for everyone. Two things about this: First when you’re waiting off ball for a catch and shoot, be in this shot ready base with your feet tilted, knees bent, and feet around shoulder width apart. Second however you choose to jump and bend your knees, you must make sure it’s the same thing everytime, don’t bend your knees more or less on one shot then another, or else you’ll be inconsistent, and when it comes to shooting consistency is key.
