The place for all things basketball

Here’s a drill you can run with your full team and is a pretty simple concept that will improve your teams ability to attack advantages, get back on defense, and learn how to score in transition. What you’re going to do for this drill is start with them just playing 5v5 however each time you blow the whistle the player with the ball has to drop it on the floor and the possession changes. This drill is a mix of transition offense and defense with also some conditioning depending on how often you blow the whistle.

Coaching Points:

Make sure all players are sprinting back on defense and getting to their spots in help or whatever defensive scheme you’re running. As long as they aren’t letting up easy buckets in transition or getting lazy.

If the offense is wasting too much time or not pushing the ball just blow your whistle, this drill is meant to be fast paced.

Pay close attention to who becomes open in transition and what advantages were available. Let your players know if they missed an opportunity for the team to score.

Keep score so that your players stay competitive and call out any laziness on offense, filling lanes, not getting down the floor quickly in transition, slowing things down, and on defense, not sprinting back, not playing help defense. Anything that isn’t helping the team improve in transition because that is the entire purpose of this drill.
