For this first team drill you’re going to want to line up 4 players on the baseline who are on offense and 4 more across from them spread out free throw line extended on defense. To start the drill you’re going to pass the ball to someone on offense and call out two names of the people on defense, these two have to touch the baseline and then sprint to get back on defense. The goal is for the offense to be able to take advantage of the 4 on 2 before the other players on defense can get back. Make sure you switch offense-defense so that the players work on both.
Coaching Points: Try and make sure that they aren’t taking unnecessary threes because with a 4 on 2 advantage, you should be able to get a layup so unless it’s a corner 3 it’s probably not the best shot. Next, a lot of dribbles to get the ball up the court, encourage the players to pass it up the court to get to the hoop as fast as possible. Finally make sure the defense isn’t just playing man to man because they are at a disadvantage, make sure they are getting back as fast as possible and covering things like the ball and first pass, and then rotating after the second pass, make sure the players that had their names called aren’t just running back into no man’s land but they’re getting to a spot with a purpose and not just picking up the ball, or running all the way to a player who is opposite of the ball instead of doc being in help side.
