The place for all things basketball

Playing 1v1 with a friend is a great way to get better but not if you aren’t taking it seriously or working on things you need to work on. So here are a few different ways to play 1v1 to make sure you’re improving your game.

Off Hand only: For this variation you are only going to drive to the left side if you are right handed and vice versa and work on finishing with your left hand. You can also have the drill start at the elbow with he defender on your hip and just finish on whatever side corresponds with your weak hand if you want to zero in on finishing. This is going to help you actually get better with your off hand because you’re playing against real competition at game speed instead of wide open finishes or dribbling without a defender.

Only Jumpers or Only shots in the paint: This is exactly how it sounds, play 1v1 where your defender knows what type of shot you have to take so that you really have to work for your points. Make sure you’re going game speed and both players are trying their hardest.

Full Court 1v1s: Playing 1v1 full court isn’t typically what players do but I think it’s an amazing way to get better at defense especially while also learning how to attack an advantage on offense and breaking a man to man press.

Start at Halfcourt, 4 dribbles: This is going to help you learn how to dribble with a purpose and get to your spots quickly. If you watch the best players in the world they only take 3-4 dribbles to get their shot ESPECIALLY in college, taking more than that often can turn you into a ball stopper, slow down the offense and disrupt the flow of the game. So do this with a friend to improve on getting to your spots quickly.
